DEADLY STORM RIPS ACROSS TRI-STATE: 'Catastrophic, crippling' blast claims 12 lives in the South as massive power outages reported in Georgia, South Carolina; New York expected to get slammed with up to 12 inches of ice and snow


It will be another day of tough sledding in the snow-weary city.

Public schools are open as the city braces for another dose of unwanted winter weather, with snow giving way to a wintry mix Thursday afternoon before switching back to snow for the evening commute.

The National Weather Service forecasts 8 to 12 inches of snow to accumulate in the city.

Approxmiately 1,700 snow plows and 450 salt spreaders were deployed on city streets once the flakes began falling, Department of Sanitation spokesman said.

The agency is expecting between 6 and 10 inches of snow.

The city Office of Emergency Management has issued a hazardous travel advisory and winter storm warning for Thursday and Friday.

People are encouraged to avoid the roads and use mass transit, which has not been hit with any major delays or disruptions as of Thursday morning.

MTA Subway and Long Island Rail Road are running on normal schedules. Metro-North service has been reduced, with some trains combined and other trains making additional stops.

Meanwhile, air travel has been hampered by the wintry blast — more than 3,300 flights have been cancelled across the country, according to FlightAware, which tracks depatures and arrivals.

PSEG, the utility company that services Long Island, is reporting 66 customers without power in Levittown Thursday morning.

New Jersey was a bit more bullish on battening down the hatches. Gov. Christie declared a state of emergency on Wednesday — a full day ahead of the storm — closing state offices and dispatching first responders.

One of the few bits of solace: alternate side parking regulations are suspended Thursday, Friday and Saturday as officials prepare to dig out from another dump of snowflakes.

The deep South received a pummeling of snow, sleet and ice that left 12 dead, cripped transportation and left residents begging for mercy.

In Texas, three people died when an ambulance careened off an icy road and became engulfed in flames. A paramedic and two passengers died, according to reports. Two weather-related traffic deaths were reported in Mississippi.

Icy wind gusts snapped powerlines and caused outages for more than 500,000 customers.

Roughly 350,000 homes and businesses were without power in Georgia. South Carolina reported 245,000 reported power outages.

It makes those across the eastern seaboard long for a one-way ticket to Sochi, Russia.

Temperatures at the site of the Winter Olympics were a balmy 63 degrees, with some in attendance taking dips in the Black Sea.
