Boy, 12, burns the hair off a 14-year-old classmate in Brooklyn school

Canarsie school day ends in violence. Victim had 'flames coming off the top of her head'

Medics treat the teenager who was burned by a younger classmate at I.S. 68 on E. 84th St. in Brooklyn Tuesday.
A 14-year-old girl was seriously hurt after a classmate set her on fire outside her Brooklyn school Tuesday, officials said.

The eighth-grader got into an argument outside Intermediate School 68 in Canarsie with a 12-year-old boy when he suddenly whipped out a lighter and set the girl’s hair extensions on fire about 3:20 p.m., officials said.

“It was like flames coming off the top of her head,” said Malcolm Joseph, 13.
Emergency workers arrived within minutes and helped tamp the flames. The teen was taken to Staten Island University Hospital with second- and third-degree burns to her neck and head.

The sixth-grade student who allegedly torched her was taken into custody, but it was unclear if he faced any charges. A spokeswoman from the Department of Education said the child faced disciplinary action.
