A 4-year-old girl died Tuesday after an out-of-control SUV fleeing police struck the child and her grandmother, officials said.
Police sources say the unidentified girl and her grandmother, 55, were walking along Amsterdam Ave. near W. 97th St. at 8:15 a.m. when the vehicle vaulted the curb, slammed into a building and then backed into them.
Paramedics rushed both victims to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, but doctors were unable to save the 4-year-old. Her grandmother is expected to survive, sources said.
The driver, an 18-year-old with a Nassau County rap sheet who was released on his own recognizance after being arrested for robbery and marijuana possession in 2012, was hyperventilating at the scene and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital for treatment, police sources said.
Charges against him were pending.
Police sources say that cops pulled the 18-year-old motorist over near W. 82nd Street for driving erratically. When the officers got out of their cruiser and approached his vehicle, the 18-year-old sped off.
Residents were stunned by the carnage as detectives closed off the street and continued their investigation.
"This is the worst accident that I've ever heard of," said Upper West Side resident Harold Serban.
“Chasing a car in this neighborhood, there’s no way a car is going to stop,” said Sandra Williams, 48.
